A new teratogenic agent applied to amphibian embryos.

چکیده
It has been demonstrated that the application of the magnetic probe to Drosophila pupae has a pronounced influence on the pattern of morphogenesis (Levengood, 1966). In addition to morphological abnormalities, there was a retardation of development which continued to occur without further treatment in succeeding generations. A theoretical basis for these disturbances has been proposed (Levengood, 1967). The present study was undertaken to find out whether comparable developmental disturbances would be produced in vertebrates. Amphibian eggs and embryos were exposed to magnetic probes at various stages of development. The results demonstrate that a brief treatment of early amphibian embryos produces several types of abnormalities, some of which are not expressed until the climax stage of metamorphosis.

STUDIES conducted during the past 10 to 15 years primarily in amphibian and chick embryos have led to a controversy over the identity of substances principally responsible for induction and early differentiation. That ribonucleoproteins are most directly involved is widely accepted. However, the question of which is most important ribonucleic acid (RNA) or protein has been the major point of di...

VARIOUS malformations in rats and mice have been observed to be caused by administration of the vital dye, Trypan blue (Gillman, Gilbert, Gillman, & Spence, 1948; Fox & Goss, 1956, 1957; Hamburgh, 1952, 1954; Waddington & Carter, 1952, 1953). Recently Waddington & Perry (1956) reported a teratogenic effect of Trypan blue on Amphibian embryos. The present paper deals with the effects of this dye...

متن کاملTeratogenesis: the Stage Dependent Susceptibility to Environmental Stressors
Early life stages are very susceptible to environmental agents; among adverse effects, teratogenesis is usually reported as the major sub lethal end point. In this contribution I will focus on the stage dependent susceptibility to physico chemical stressors evaluated by means of physical and chemical agents (e.g. UV-B irradiation, H2O2, lead, cadmium, nickel, naringenin, 2,4-D an organometalic ...

The toxic, genotoxic and teratogenic potential of a municipal sewage sludge was assessed using the micronucleus assay on the larvae of the amphibian Xenopus laevis and with the tobacco somatic mutation test using the yellow-green xanthi Dulieu mutant a(1)(+)/a(1) a(2)(+)/a(2). The teratogenic potential was assessed by means of the Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus (FETAX). Various doses o...
